Managing your illness

Everybody is different and your experience with cancer will be very personal to you. You cannot be judged for how you manage your condition, because this is your journey.

Each form of treatment will have its positive and negative aspects. It is important to focus on the positive aims of treatment, while knowing how to manage the negative aspects such as side effects. There will be good and bad days during your journey, but please remember there are ways of managing and controlling side effects, and there is a great deal of support available to help you cope while living with cancer.

You will have been referred to health professionals with specific knowledge and skills related to your condition. They, including your care team, will be an important source of information for you.

You may find it useful to talk to someone with a similar diagnosis, to find out how they have coped with everyday life. There is a great deal of help and advice available to you if and when you need it. We have included a page on this website to help you find where to get support.
