Biographies

Arthur Porter
Arthur brings a unique blend of medical practice and business experience to the Board. Graduating from the University of Cambridge he carried out postgraduate studies in Radiotherapy in Canada to become Chief of Radiation Oncology at the London Regional Cancer Centre, Ontario. He then became CEO to the Detroit Medical Centre and has subsequently become Director General and CEO of McGill University Health Centre, Montreal, Quebec.

Karol Sikora (Chair)
Professor Karol Sikora is a leading cancer specialist. He was Clinical Director of Cancer Services at Hammersmith Hospital for 12 years. Professor Sikora was seconded as Chief of the WHO Cancer Programme for two years.

Paul Ellis
Paul Ellis is Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Guy’s King’s St Thomas’ Cancer Centre in London with responsibility of the management of breast and lung cancer. He is the author of numerous peer reviewed scientific papers in these fields. He has been an active participant in the development of the UK Inter Group for Adjuvant Breast Cancer Treatment.

Nick James
Nick James is Professor of Clinical Oncology at the University of Birmingham. He graduated with first class honours from the University of London and trained in Oncology at Hammersmith Hospital completing a PhD in 1993. He took up his post at Birmingham initially as a Senior Lecturer in 2001 and became Professor in 2003. His main interests are urological cancer and novel methods of administering radiotherapy.

Alison Richardson
Alison is the Professor of Cancer and Palliative Nursing Care at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery at King’s College, London. She graduated as a nurse from the Welsh School of Medicine in 1985 and trained as a cancer nurse at the Royal Marsden Hospital subsequent to this. She leads a research and development programme focused on the assessment and management of symptoms (particularly cancer-related fatigue) support and self-management needs of people affected by cancer, the nature of cancer and palliative nursing work. She led the team responsible for developing the NICE guidance onImproving Supportive and Palliative Care for Adults with Cancer published in 2004.

Harpreet Wasan
Harpreet Wasan trained at University College Hospital and is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Hammersmith Hospital in west London. He received his postgraduate training in internal medicine and medical oncology at University Hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital and Hammersmith. He held an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship and earned his PhD working for Sir Walter Bodmer. He is also a member of the UK National Cancer Research Steering Committee.

David Boote
Dr Boote qualified at St Mary's Hospital, London in 1983. His oncological training included posts at the Royal Free Hospital, London the Westminster Hospital, London and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. Dr Boote has a special interest in novel chemotherapy regimens.
